Curated by New York University’s Tamiment Library, this exhibition draws on historical photographs, archives, artifacts, and film clips to tell the story of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and its contemporary lessons. The exhibition will be on view from Wednesday, February 16 through Thursday, May 19 at the NYU Open House, 528 LaGuardia Place between Bleecker and West 3rd Street. Gallery hours: Tues/Wed/Fri from Noon – 5 PM; Thurs 2-7 PM; Sat/Sun 1-4 PM. Free and open to the public

Scholars and union activists discuss the history of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the United College Employees of the Fashion Institute of Technology, the differences between private and public sector unions, and the prospects for both in coming years.

I came across the old photo above, on Flickr, while gathering resources for this site. Those kids could have gone to PS 177, which was right next door to their building. Right now that address is either part of the Coleman Oval ball field or the skating park that adjoins it.

About New York Labor History

A recent visit to NYU's Tamiment Library to purchase their New York State Labor History map motivated me to create this site to augment the valuable and often neglected information it contained. The augmentation takes advantage of web 2.0 multimedia resources, whether from youtube or material in the public domain from the prelinger archives. The site also explores labor history beyond New York State.
I decided also to give a more dedicated home to some of the labor history content that I had posted on other sites as well as content I had created while working in the New York City public schools as a social studies and technology integration specialist.

This is the first and only International Labor Day. It belongs to the working class and is dedicated to the revolution! -- Eugene V. Debs. On May 1, 1886, the Working People of Chicago called a general Strike, demanding an 8 hour working day and decent work conditions. The workers were brutally repressed by their employers and city officials. On May 3rd, 6 workers were murdered, and the next day, in Haymarket Square, 11 more people were killed after the police attacked a crowd of workers. The Radical Labor movement went nationwide, with 11,562 business's hit by strikes that year. Although much work remains for the Labor Movement, the beginnings of widespread action began on May Day. May Day is the Workers Day!

One of Northland's earliest posters! This print commemorates the struggle for the eight-hour day, which involved a general strike in Chicago on May 1st, 1886, and culminated later that same week with the Haymarket massacre. Offset poster, black ink on mustard-colored paper.
